launch of a major direct mail campaign to online advertisers featuring
the art of controversial artist Winston Smith.
The campaign will consist of a series of four consecutive mailings
to a broad base of online advertisers, each with a separate image
of Winston Smith’s art. The four examples of Winston Smith’s
art will be complemented by a poster of one of Winston’s
seminal pieces that will be available to each of the targeted
firms and used widely in other on-site promotional efforts.
Since the 1970’s, Winston Smith has built a reputation
among the art community with his devilish wit. Most of Smith’s
work is based on images from vintage magazines that he decomposes
and recombines to convey compromising or politically revealing
artistic statements that are unequivocally controversial. His
work has been characterized as "truly subversive artwork" and
he has been called "…the most vibrant collage maestro
since Max Ernst." Popular underground artist Frank Kozik
credited Winston with being "single-handedly responsible
for an entire generation's graphic style."
